Captain Jolie MaciasCap Macias Profile photo

Captain Jolie Macias was hired with the Newark Police Department as a police officer in 2004.  In 2014 she was promoted to the rank of sergeant and in 2017 she was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. Captain Macias has a wide organizational perspective from her experiences working in both the Field Operations and Support Services divisions of the police department.

Initially assigned as an Operations Lieutenant, Captain Macias has overseen multiple patrol teams, the Detective Unit, Traffic, patrol scheduling, and the School Resource Program.  Captain Macias helped develop and implement the Tri-City Crowd Management Team, which has been a collaborative resource for the Alameda County Sideshow Task Force. She has served as the Tactical Commander of the SWAT and Crisis Negotiations Team, in addition to leading the Use of Force training staff and Peer Support Teams

As the Support Services Lieutenant since November of 2020, Captain Macias worked in an administrative capacity and was instrumental in supervising the move into the new police facility. She worked closely with professional staff in the Records and Property Unit and the Communications Center. She managed hiring and recruitment efforts as well as Professional Standards and Training.

During her time as police sergeant, she supervised a busy weekend patrol team where she served as the front-line supervisor for several major critical incidents.  Captain Macias served as the SWAT Team Leader and led the team during multiple Urban Shield training events. She formed a strong partnership with the Newark Unified School District, creatively solving a need for a unified emergency protocol, and developed the School Safety program.

Captain Macias completed a three-year rotation as a detective for the Southern Alameda County Major Crimes Task Force. In addition to investigating both gang and narcotic crimes, she testified as a court recognized drug expert and worked in a variety of undercover capacities. As an officer she served as a Field Training Officer, Explorer Advisor, and was a member of the SWAT Team.

She is a recent graduate of the California POST Command College and is currently enrolled in a Master of Law Enforcement and Public Safety Leadership program at the University of San Diego. She also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from San Francisco State University. 

Captain Macias has deep roots in the city of Newark and worked in the Recreation Department as a dance instructor prior to being hired with the police department.  She remains connected to the city on and off duty spending time shopping, dining, and skating within the Newark community with her family and friends.

Lieutenant Brian SimonLT Simon Profile photo

Lieutenant Brian Simon promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on August 8th, 2021. Brian transferred to our department as a lateral officer from the Pleasanton Police Department on January 6, 2014. Since joining our department, he has served as the Newark Police Association President, a Crisis Negotiations Team Member, and was promoted to Sergeant in June of 2017. As a Sergeant, Brian served as the supervisor of the Traffic Unit coordinating the department’s response to traffic concerns in the community.

Brian was born and raised in Newark and has lived here off and on for over 40 years. He graduated from Newark Memorial High School. He has attended Ohlone, Chabot, and San Jose State colleges and obtained his bachelor’s degree from the University of Phoenix.

Brian became interested in law enforcement in high school and served as a Newark Police Explorer reporting to his Explorer Advisors, Officers Jim Leal and Mike Carroll.

Brian has 23 years of law enforcement experience. He started his career as a Police Officer with the Union City Police Department (UCPD) in September 1998. He worked for UCPD for nearly 10 years before joining the Oakland Police Department (OPD) in July 2008, where he stayed until being hired by Pleasanton Police Department (PPD) in January 2011. He has worked in various specialty positions over the years including Community Policing Officer, Field Training Officer, Hostage Negotiator, Motor/Traffic Officer, Internal Affairs Investigator, and Volunteer Advisor.

In Brian’s free time he enjoys riding his motorcycle, camping, and spending time with his wife and children.

Lieutenant Salvador SandovalLT Sandoval Profile photo

Lieutenant Salvador (Sal) Sandoval was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on August 8, 2021 and has been assigned to Field Operations.

Lieutenant Sandoval became interested in law enforcement in high school and served as a Hayward Police Explorer. Sal began his law enforcement career with the City of Hayward in 1999 as a Reserve Police Officer. He was hired as a Police Officer with the Newark Police Department on June 26, 2001.

In his career with the City of Newark, Sal has been an Honor Guard Team Member, Field Training Officer, Hostage Negotiator, Drug Recognition Expert, Citizen Police Academy Instructor, and a Vehicle Pursuit and Spike Strip Instructor. In an effort to give back to the program that started his career path, Sal became our Police Explorer Advisor in 2003. Sal was selected as a Special Enforcement Team (SET) Detective in January 2007 and he became a member of the California Narcotics Officers’ Association and the California Gang Investigators Association. He served as a SET Detective until February 2011 when he rotated back to Patrol.

In August 2015 he was selected as the School Resource Officer for Newark Memorial High School where he served until his promotion to Sergeant in February 2018.

Lieutenant Sandoval has received numerous awards including the Department Medal of Distinguished Service, two City of Newark Pride Awards, two Department Gold Awards, and a Department Blue Award.

In addition to his work here, Sal became a high school teacher at Newark Memorial in 2014 where he teaches a Law Enforcement/Homeland Security Course for Mission Valley ROP. Students from his class eventually join our Newark Police Explorer Program. Two such students were recently hired by the City of Newark as Police Officers.

During his free time Sal enjoys riding his motorcycle, model railroads, and spending time with his family, friends, and his Dachshund “Jimmy Dean”.

Lieutenant Michelle GrieseLT Griese Profile photo

Lieutenant Michelle Griese was hired as Police Lieutenant on July 18, 2022. Lieutenant Griese has over 21 years of law enforcement experience. She started her career as a Police Officer with the Fremont Police Department in April 2001. As an officer she held the ancillary positions of Crime Scene Investigator, Field Training Officer, Arrest Control & Self-Defense Instructor, Hostage Negotiator, Burglary Detective, Peer Support Member, Report Writing Instructor, and Bike Patrol Officer.

Lieutenant Griese promoted to the rank of Sergeant in January 2011. As a Sergeant she served in Patrol and supervised the Field Training Officer program. She was the Report Writing Lead Instructor and Program Manager, Tactical Emergency Medical Support Team Sergeant, First Aid/CPR/Trauma Program Manager, as well as the AED and Narcan Program Manager. In addition, she held assignments as the Court Liaison Sergeant, Internal Affairs Sergeant, and Peer Support Coordinator. At a time when the Fremont Police Department replaced their Computer Aided Dispatch and Records Management System, then Sergeant Griese, represented the patrol staff on this project.

Lieutenant Griese promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in July 2021. As a Lieutenant, she served as a Patrol Watch Commander, Peer Support Manager, Wellness Team Manager, and managed Detention, Property & Evidence, and the Crime Lab.

Lieutenant Griese was raised in Fremont and graduated from Kennedy High School. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry with a minor in Computer Science from California State University Hayward. Lieutenant Griese is a graduate of both the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute (SLI) and California POST Management Program.
