Republic Services Update – Waste Collection Disruption

The City of Newark is providing this update to keep our community informed about the status of waste collection services provided by Republic Services.

As the service disruption by Republic Services enters its fourth day, stemming from a work stoppage by local drivers in solidarity with Teamster drivers striking in other U.S. cities, the City continues to work closely with Republic Services on interim solutions to restore service. Resolving this issue remains a top priority, as we understand the inconvenience and challenges this is causing for our residents and neighborhoods.

Republic Services has just informed the City that it will begin resuming limited residential collection in Newark starting this afternoon, Friday, July 11. The company anticipates operating throughout the weekend using substitute drivers to begin addressing the backlog of uncollected waste. Initial efforts will prioritize the collection of trash (garbage) bins, with other materials such as recycling and yard waste collected as capacity allows. Service will be limited, and not all residences will receive immediate collection. The full schedule will depend on the available capacity, which is still being determined by Republic Services.

While the City actively explores all available remedies, we encourage our community to support neighborhood cleanliness and livability. Residents might want to consider limiting waste generation where possible, securely tying trash bags, and storing them in covered bins to help prevent pests and odors. It may also be helpful to double- or triple-bag items like pet waste and reuse plastic bags already on hand.

Newark residents and businesses, with proof of residency/business in Newark, may continue to utilize free drop-off disposal services for garbage, recycling, and yard waste at the Fremont Recycling and Transfer Station, 41149 Boyce Rd. in Fremont. For hours of operation, please visit their website

For billing questions during this service disruption, residents and businesses should contact Republic Services for assistance at 510-657-3500 or visit their website.

The City will continue to provide timely updates as new information becomes available. We appreciate the community’s patience during this time.
