To assist residents in preparing for their garage sales, we have provided information regarding signage and advertising.
Posting Yard & Garage Sale Signs in Public Areas is Prohibited Newark Municipal Code 17.25.040
To help maintain the safety, cleanliness, and visual appeal of our community, the posting of garage sale, yard sale, or similar signs is not allowed in the public right-of-way or on public property.
What is the Public Right-of-Way?
The public right-of-way typically includes:
- Streets and sidewalks
- Utility poles and street signs
- Parkways and parkway trees
- Medians and traffic islands
- Public parks and open spaces
- Any land owned or maintained by the city for public use
Why Are These Signs Prohibited?
- Safety: Signs can obstruct visibility for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.
- Cleanliness: Many signs are not removed after events and become litter.
- Damage: Attaching signs to public infrastructure (like streetlights or traffic signs) can cause damage or interfere with city operations.
Allowed Alternatives
You may post signs on:
- Your own private property
- Other private property with the owner's permission
